New Hyundai Elantra 2016 First Review

Hyundai has updated their premium sedan, Elantra which was recently unveiled at LA Auto show. The new Elantra is 20mm longer and 25mm wider than the current model and uses high tensile steel in its frame which makes the new car even stiffer than before adding more stability to the dynamics of the new car. The new Elantra looks completely different from the current model especially from the front and the back. The face now gets new edgy headlights replacing the curvy headlamps of the current model.

The projector headlamps now come integrated with side indicators and there are vertically placed LED lights placed as fog lamps. The face now looks even more aggressive than before thanks to the newly designed hexagonal chrome slats forming the grille and air-dam together. There are sharper creases all over the bumper and the bonnet also gets two prominent lines on both sides. In fact the whole designing approach now includes prominent body lines as company has moved away from the curvy and flowing design scheme. This has taken away the voluptuous visual character of the earlier car and now the Elantra looks leaner and meaner than before.

Even the rear styling looks sharper than before including its horizontally placed LED tail lamps with revised styling. Overall, the new Elantra looks sharper and more aerodynamic than before and less curves plus solid lines now makes it look more premium and modern.

Inside as well, the curvy and flowing design has been replaced with a horizontal dash layout. This car gets new three spoke steering wheel with steering mounted controls for the new 7-inch infotainment system which also gets navigation, Bluetooth connectivity. There are many new buttons and controls in the car adding premium touch to the car along with usage of high quality leather inside. The new Elantra comes with many new safety features including Vehicle Stability Management, Traction control, ABS, tire pressure monitoring system, seven airbags, ESC and few optional features such as High Beam Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane and Change Assistance etc. In terms of space, rear headroom and legroom have been improved.

Technically as well, the new Elantra is different from the current model as it gets option of two new engines. One is the 2.0L Atkinson petrol engine which has a power and torque output of 147bhp and 179Nm respectively. This engine will be available with a six-speed manual as well as automatic transmission. The second unit is the 1.4L turbocharged GDI Kappa engine which has power and torque output of 126bhp and 211Nm respectively. This engine is only available with a 7-seven dual clutch gearbox.

The new Elantra is surely a better car than before in term of looks, safety features, design, technology and dynamics and this same model is expected to reach our Indian shores as well. Apart from the optional features, we do not expect any major changes in the Indian version. Once launched, this new Elantra is surely going to give tough fight to its rivals especially, the Toyota Corolla Altis.
